第 五等級配線系統於1992年8月公佈之" 公眾通訊系統 TSB-40 "，(TIA)通訊工業協會制定最小容許之規格特性，針對(UTP)無遮蔽對絞線與硬體連接之須求，規範於TSB-36 規定內。第五等級之配線產品均符合 TSB-36 及 TSB-40 之規格，能支援系統之傳輸達 100 MBPS，以因應 IEEE 802.5 16MBPS 標記環狀網路及 ANSI X3T9.5 100 MBPS TP-PMD 之標準。
