Loop-back test--Type of diagnostic test in which the transmitted signal is returned to the sending device, after passing through all of or a portion of a data communications link or network: this allows a technician (or built-in diagnostic circuit) to compare the returned signal with the transmitted signal, this comparison provides the basis for evaluating the operational status of the equipment and the transmission paths through which the signal traveled.
